Grounded in place, shaped with care

Planted with intent and nurtured for over three decades, the vineyard reflects both the character of its land and the care of its custodians.

The vineyard was designed with premium fruit in mind. Planted on a north-facing slope, it receives optimal sunlight, which is crucial in cool regions for even ripening across the vines.

The uniform slope provides natural drainage, while shallow soils regulate excessive vine growth. This results in open canopies with good ventilation. The site is open to cooling sea breezes in the summer and protected from damaging south westerlies.

Carefully set-out row and vine spacing allows for optimal sunlight exposure and ensures a balanced fruit-to-leaf ratio, resulting in grapes with well-developed flavour and balanced sugar and acidity.

The first plantings began with one clone each of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, expanding over time to 4 hectares of Pinot Noir and 3 hectares of Chardonnay, now featuring multiple clones.

Almost 40 years on, the Dexter vineyard produces beautifully balanced fruit. A true reflection of its site and the attentive care of its custodians.
